Leveler, Cleaner & Compression
The first stage to achieving a balanced vocal is VocalShaper’s Leveler feature. Unlike traditional processing, this Leveler utilises pink noise to continuously adjust vocal amplitude, ensuring a smooth and consistent performance. The Cleaner stage eliminates unwanted background noise, headphone leakage, and intrusive breath sounds. With adjustable sensitivity, you have full control over the cleaning process, allowing you to tailor it to your specific recording environment. Based on the classic “child” compressor but optimised for vocals, this knob seamlessly adjusts compression levels based on input from the Leveler or directly from your recordings. Adjust for subtle natural compression or push the parameter hard for more aggressive punchy dynamics.
No More Mud
Demud is your ultimate pitch-tracking low resonance remover. Operating between 60-360Hz, this dial dynamically targets and reduces unwanted low resonances, ensuring crystal-like vocal clarity. Whether your vocal has subtle but annoying muddiness or more pronounced resonances, Demud automatically adjusts, applying the perfect amount of reduction for pristine sound quality. Plus, you can fine-tune the sensitivity to achieve precise results.
Sibilant Success
S-Volume is one of the groundbreaking features of VocalShaper, designed to tame those unruly sibilants with unparalleled precision. Unlike traditional de-essers, S-Volume goes above and beyond, offering linear control over sibilant “s” sounds for more natural and accurate processing. Use the Listen button to audition the exact signal that’s being affected. Whether you're dealing with lispy vocal performances or excessive de-essing artefacts, S-Volume handles expression with care. Experience smooth and seamless sibilance balancing without compromising the overall vocal texture or its natural timbre.
Brilliance & Shine
Don't let your vocals blend into the background. Use VocalShaper’s Air control to elevate them to new heights of clarity and impact. Crafted with precision, especially for vocal brilliance, Air acts as a finely-tuned exciter. The processing infuses your vocals with a delightful crispiness and buttery brightness that enhances the overall presence.
Tone & Enhance
VocalShaper’s Tone section is tailor-made for vocal processing, affecting just the body of the vocal and not sibilance. The Cut knob is used for subtle low-frequency trimming, the Low and LowMid knobs for adding body and punch, the Mid knob for adjusting muddiness, and the High knob for tweaking brilliance. The Depth control applies a boosted version of LA Opto comp processing, adding profound depth and getting vocals to be more “in your face”. Heat warms up vocal performances, introducing harmonic complexity and warmth. Spread is a classic micro-pitch-shifter effect that widens the stereo image of your vocals.
Visual Feedback & Comparison
VocalShaper is built on vector graphics with a resizable interface. The live audio is displayed on the central window, showing exactly what’s happening to the signal as it travels through the plugin in real-time. This allows for accurate monitoring at every step of the chain. For those who like to experiment, contrast different processing chains with AB comparison, and use the undo / redo buttons to revert any changes.
