Hybrid Granular Synthesizer

We’ve all been there: you open a new synth, load up a preset, layer a few effects, and start playing. It sounds polished, but it feels sterile—lacking the unpredictable energy that makes hardware special.

SUPRA was created in collaboration with Algebra Within, an independent Hungarian company and record label, and darkInteger, a psytrance producer, DJ, and DSP programmer closely associated with the label. Together, we built SUPRA to break through that wall.

Taking inspiration from the analog domain, its triangle oscillator features subtle pitch drift that evokes classic vintage synth circuits. A high-frequency FM modulator drives the carrier into rich, harmonically complex territory, while a granular engine captures your sound and reshapes it into evolving, pitch-shifted clouds. To finish, morphing resonant filters and a shimmering delay line push your signal into uncharted waters.

Flowing through six sequential DSP stages, SUPRA culminates in a pitch-shifting feedback delay capable of generating cascading, meandering trails.

With its unique synth architecture, SUPRA brings unusual performance possibilities to a monophonic synth. With six distinct DSP modules, a simple carrier is transformed from the ground up…

• Analog-Drifted Carrier: Primary triangle oscillator runs through an asymmetric diode wave-shaping network to emulate vintage hardware saturation, while a dual-sine generator injects organic pitch drift.
• FM Modulator: High-frequency modulating sine wave applies linear FM directly to the carrier, generating richly musical harmonics.
• Click-Free Granular Capture: Dry carrier signal is recorded into a circular audio buffer, triggering and crossfading pitch-shifted grains via a sample-accurate window envelope.
• State-Variable Filter: Blended granular / dry signal flows into a morphing SVF filter that sweeps continuously through lowpass, bandpass, and highpass frequency curves.
• Comb Filter & Dynamics: A high-resonance comb filter adds metallic, physical-modeling-style string textures while a feedback compressor tames filter tail peaks.
• Pitch-Shifting Delay: The final signal is routed through a stereo auto-panner and delay line featuring a built-in pitch shifter inside the feedback loop, conjuring cascading trails.     

Macro Madness

At the heart of SUPRA’s sound design architecture lies an indirect modulation matrix that turns simple patch manipulation into a fluid, expressive performance. Rather than locking LFOs to fixed parameters, two master macro hubs act as central morphing engines, driving sweeping parameter shifts through dedicated M1 and M2 depth sliders tied to each primary knob. This routing unlocks boundless creative freedom: a single macro turn can simultaneously brighten a filter, alter granular parameters, and push the feedback delay into complex shimmer trails. Whether you let the customizable dual LFOs drive the macros, or map them to manual morph controls, this architecture builds living, interconnected tones that react dynamically to every move you make.

Leave it to Chance

The performance-focused dual randomizer system of SUPRA opens infinite creative possibilities by turning patch variation into an active, evolving performance element. Designed for glitch-free performance, experiment with randomization in real time without clicks or pops. When note-triggered randomization is enabled, LFO randomization can also vary waveform shapes, speeds and depths, revealing unexpected sonic textures you might never have programmed by hand.
