Welcome to the course. Your instructor is producer Nick Holiday. In this course, you will learn by example as you watch Nick achieve that sought after wider stereo sound. Nick uses Ableton and basic effects found in most DAWs. Ableton is not required as these techniques can be applied to any application. If you do have Ableton feel free to follow along.
Video 1 - Introduction (02:28)
Welcome to the course. In this clip, Nick provides an overview and summary of the course topics.
Video 2 - Plucks Pt. 1 (13:26)
In this demonstration, Nick begins with multiple pluck tracks. While dissecting each individual track he discusses how to get clarity and width while avoiding phase cancellation. You learn about mixing in mono, how to isolate and shape each sound individually, set up an effects chain, proper panning and how to create space for each sound through the use of an EQ.
Video 3 - Plucks Pt. 2 (13:03)
Continuing with plucks, Nick puts the finishing touches on the sounds and covers what to cut and what to boost. You will learn the benefits of subtle panning enhancements and how to make the most of the space in the sound spectrum to gain width and creating an illusion of loudness.
Video 4 - Plucks Pt. 3 (08:29)
In this section, Nick will balance the subtle and softer sounds within the mix. Without an increase in volume, Nick is able to bring each sound to the front of the mix. You will learn how each sound can be allocated to its own space making it easily audible.
Video 5 - Pads (10:16)
With the completion of the pluck section, Nick applies his widening techniques to a pad. While the method is the same the approach is different. You will learn how to differentiate and apply the right methods to different sounds. As you watch each part take shape you will not just be amazed by how full, wide and clear the end result is, you will be able to apply it to your own mix. Nick also covers the basics of harmonic content, tape saturation and manipulation of time in milliseconds.
Video 6 - Drums (08:50)
Completing this course you will discover why you don’t need to rely on stereo delay to achieve a great hard hitting drum sound. Nick will demonstrate through the use of an EQ how, when done right, it can take your kick sound from flat to full. Nick also gives up his secret go to plugin and demonstrates how to apply it to drum sounds.
