In computing, glitch is an error, a temporal malfunction. With
technology reaching music and arts in general, this “error” became an
influence to new post-digital aesthetics. In this video-tutorial series,
producer and composer Mariano Balestena shows you what you need to know
about glitch production in Ableton Live 9, from the basics to more
complex techniques. The series includes a Live set with some of the
sounds shown.
Styles: Experimental, IDM, Techno, Downtempo, Lo-Fi.
Glitch percussion and Glitch percussion synthesis.
Arguably
one of the main aspects of glitch production, synthesizing and
sequencing glitch percussions is no obvious task; there are lots of ways
of doing it and it takes time. Here, we show you several workflows to
approach this baroque textures.
Pad sound design
Pads
often form an important aspect of your tracks, and if you are producing
experimental music, sometimes just a low pass filter and a chorus won’t
suffice. These are some experimental techniques to achieve
other-worldly pads.
Importing files as raw data
Sound
design is a complex task that often gets you carried away from the
producing workflow. Here’s a cool technique that will allow you to lose
some control and to produce noise textures in an unexpected way.
Glitch stabs
Stabs
are a fundamental part of your groove and at the same time can help
providing harmonic context. In this video, I will show you a few ways to
spice them up with some glitchy goodness.
Master track freeze
If you want to make your track sound like your listeners’ device broke, try applying this easy and fun technique.
Sudden changes
Cool tricks to give your synth patches a sense of instability transforming the sound in fast and unpredictable way.
Effects feedback
Feedback
is loathed by soundmen and worshiped by noise-music lovers. We are
going to apply a few techniques with sends and returns tracks to create
new textures, from soft ambient eco-systems to raging feedback.
